Brief Biographies

Rav Moshe Feinstein, TZ"L

Born in Uzda, near Minsk, Belarus, Rav Moshe learned in Slutsk, Shklov, and Amstislav before being appointed rabbi of Luban, where he served for sixteen years. He and his family moved to New York City in 1936 where he lived for the remainder of his life. Settling in the Lower East Side, he became the Rosh Yeshiva of Mesivta Tiferes Yerushalayim, and later established a branch of the yeshiva in Staten Island, NY, each still under the guidance of his sons Rav Dovid and Rav Reuven, respectively. He was president of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada and chaired the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Agudath Israel of America from the 1960s until his death. Several Torah giants, even those older than he, considered Rav Moshe as the Gadol haDor. When he passed away on March 23, 1986, there were an estimated 300,000 people in attendance at his funeral. His many volumes of teshuvos and Gemara insights are his eternal gift to Klal Yisroel. Indeed, he lives on in the Torah he entrusted to us.

Rav Avrohom haKohein Pam, TZ"L

Once becoming a student in Yeshivas Torah vDa'as, the only Mesivta (yeshiva high school) in Brooklyn at the time, Rav Pam remained there for the rest of his life. He received s'micha at age 23, one of only two students in the yeshiva who accomplished this goal at that point. In 1939, after learning from his rebbi and Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Dovid Leibowitz, Rav Pam was appointed rebbi of the most advanced students, a position he held for 62 years - teaching more than 2,000 students. Becoming the Rosh Yeshiva, and member of the elite group of Torah figures, the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Agudath Israel of America, Rav Pam was the inspirational force behind Shuvu, a program created to assist children of the Former Soviet Union, which he gave his heart and soul to the last 10 years of his life. His smile and care earned him a special place in the hearts of a generation. Besides for being a true Torah giant and respected halacha authority, Rav Pam was a master of middos, as all felt his warmth and love.
